Laser Eye Surgery in a Nutshell

Laser eye surgery refers to a group of different procedures all designed to help reduce the effect of refractive errors. There are multiple types of laser eye surgery, and the type that you have may depend on a variety of factors, including the goals you have, your eye health, and the degree of your refractive error.

However, having laser eye surgery does not guarantee 20/20 vision. Some patients still require glasses or contacts to make the most of their vision, but statistics say that most patients still enjoy improved vision following the operation.

Before you can have laser eye surgery, you will first need to have a consultation. Consultations include an eye exam to help determine if your eyes are right for laser eye surgery.

Some factors that may prevent you from having laser eye surgery include:

Once we have determined your candidacy for laser eye surgery, we can refer you to trained ophthalmologists at any NVision Laser Eye Center of your choice.

Laser eye surgery is a permanent and irreversible procedure. To help ensure the best results, please follow this guide:

  • Please book off a couple of days off work and school following the operation to help your eyes heal.
  • Please have a reliable mode of transportation available because you will not be able to drive for a couple of days.
  • Please wear lint-free clothing to the surgery. Clothes like wool or fleece can attract particles in the air and affect the overall outcome of the surgery.
  • Please do not wear any fragrances, colognes, or perfumes that contain alcohol.
  • You will likely need to remove your contact lenses a couple of days before the operation. Some contact lenses can change the shape of your cornea and affect the procedure.

Following the surgery, your eye care team will give you a recovery plan to follow and book a series of follow-up appointments. The plan and appointments are to help make sure your eyes heal properly and give you the best possible outcome.

In some cases, you will be provided with specialty sunglasses to help manage light sensitivity, and eye drops to help manage dry eye and prevent infection.

Types of Laser Eye Surgery

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) eye surgery happens when your ophthalmologist creates a small flap from the outermost layer of your cornea to get access to your corneal stroma.

An excimer laser then reshapes the corneal stroma, providing you with clear vision. The flap is set back in its original position and left to heal.

PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) eye surgery is very similar to LASIK, albeit a few distinct differences.

During PRK surgery, your ophthalmologist completely removes the outermost layer of your eye’s cornea, called the epithelium. This grants the surgeon access to the corneal stroma, where they reshape it using an excimer laser. The eye is then left to heal over a few days.

RLE (refractive lens exchange) is different from most laser eye surgery in that instead of reshaping your cornea, your surgeon completely replaces your clear crystalline lens with an artificial intraocular lens.
