Why Are Eye Exams Important for Children?

Regular eye exams aren’t just important for determining your child’s prescription — they are also crucial for detecting various eye problems that could develop asymptomatically.

The first few years of your child’s life are essential for their eye development. During this time, they learn how to navigate and interact with the world around them, making their vision extremely important to their early learning.

However, conditions like myopia, strabismus, and amblyopia can affect their vision and cause eye strain, headaches, and difficulty concentrating.

When Should Your Child Have an Eye Exam?

Eye health differs from child to child. However, you can follow this recommended timeline provided by the American Academy of Ophthalmology to help ensure your child’s eyes are developing normally.

Your child should have their eyes examined at birth to make sure they are working normally. This is especially important for children who may be at risk of developing eye problems already.

Your child’s next eye exam should happen around 6 months to 1 year after their birth. Most eye conditions have not had enough time to develop yet, but this exam can help detect early indications of these conditions.

Your child should have their next eye exam between the ages of 3 and 5. This is the time when eye conditions like myopia, strabismus, and amblyopia can start to develop. If these conditions are not identified and appropriately managed, they can lead to permanent vision damage.

Children should have their next eye exam just before starting school, and subsequent eye exams every year after. The most common issue children face at this age is myopia, and leaving it unaddressed could affect their performance in school and their attention span.

Spotting Your Child’s Vision Problems

Your child can develop eye issues they are not aware of. It is important to watch their behaviour to see if it is indicative of a vision problem. Some indicators are:

  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Frequent headaches
  • Sitting close to the television
  • Holding reading materials close to their face
  • Squinting or covering an eye to see better
  • Losing their place while reading
  • Avoiding close-up work like reading or writing

If your child regularly exhibits any or all of these behaviours, please request an eye exam.

What Happens During an Eye Exam

The eye exam process is relatively similar for all ages, but we take extra care to make sure that your child feels comfortable and relaxed throughout the exam.

Before the exam, we will have a discussion about your child’s eye health and family health history. We will also address any questions or concerns you or your child may have. Once we have reviewed your medical history and answered your questions, we will start with your child’s appointment.

The first thing we will take a look at is your child’s visual acuity. There are a variety of ways of doing this, but some of the most common techniques include using Snellen eye charts and phoropters. Once we have determined your child’s prescription, our next step will be assessing your child’s eye health.

Checking your child’s eye health helps us detect any conditions or diseases that may be developing without your knowledge. By observing your child’s:

We can detect a range of issues and help develop a strategy to manage them.

After this, we will wrap up the exam by recommending any prescriptions or medications your child needs to promote great vision and eye health.
